Awful News

My niece (almost 2 years old) has a serious heart problem. She has a hole in her heart and also a valve that isn't working properly. The hole isn't a huge deal, but the valve will require heart surgery. This very scary for my whole family - especially Teena and Steve. She's in the hospital now, and she has started taking medication to correct her blood pressure, but we don't know when she will get the surgery. The surgery is bad for a few reasons - first heart surgeries aren't easy on anybody, grown up or small, and second because of the nature of the surgery, it's a valve replacement, so as her heart grows, she will require more surgeries when she outgrows the artificial valve....which isn't a good thing.

Anyway, keep her in your thoughts, and if your the praying type, your prayers. I'll keep you all posted.

The second worst movie I've seen in my life.

I just posted a review of "Running Scared" on Rotten Tomatoes. It seems like most of the users liked the movie, so I'm hoping for some juicy comments from people who don't like my review.

The critics were pretty hard on the movie, but I was shocked to see Ebert give it thumbs up. If Roeper gives it a matching thumb up, I am never watching their show again.

Shatford Thurston

So, I've grown to like my brother-in-law Stephen. He's a good guy, a devoted father and a good husband for my sister. But one thing he can never be allowed to do is name his children.

When Teena was pregnant with her first child, several awful names were suggested. Most notably "Never". Never. As in: Never going to get a job. Never will have a girlfriend. Never will receive birthday gifts from uncle Tony. Never. Thankfully, cooler heads prevailed and Kianna was chosen as a name. Kianna. As in: Kianna won a Nobel Peace Prize. Kianna was elected prime minister. Kianna has that kind of a ring to it.

So now a new bun is in the oven, and the name game is being played again. The name "Shatford" is being discussed. The logical short form of this name is the past tense of a swearword. They dismissed the much better name of Dominic for fear that the child may be mocked as "Dumb Dom". SHATFORD. SHAT - FORD. I'm sure kids won't be able to think of anything to say about that. Another name being batted around is Jackson. Good name. Wrong name combination. My sister's last name is Frost. I've always wanted to name my child "Tinker" but realize it will not be possible for obvious reasons.

Anyway, I needed to vent. And now I have.

Shatford.

SO HECTIC

I'm on reading "break" right now, and I use the term "break" loosely. It is so hectic with group projects, I can't believe it. I'm lucky, because all of my groupmates have stayed in the city / country over the break.....so many groups have teammates that left the country that I got off lucky.

Anyway, I've worked every single day of the "break" and there is no end in sight.

Other news....

Watched "Grizzly Man" today. Pretty interesting show. The dude was in need of medication / counselling...

I've been loving my DS. Seriously no regret about the purchase, and I couldn't be any happier with this game. Still haven't been able to find Phoenix Wright though.

The DS games are so good, in fact, that I'm willing to overlook the obvious design flaws. The buttons are misplaced and my hands literally fall asleep after 30 minutes. Maybe it's just that my hands are too big....you know what they say about big hands, right ladies?

I dream of being this good.

One of the greatest world records in human history.

Finally, it happened to me....

It finally happened, I knew it would happen sooner or later, and that it was only a matter of time, but it happened today. I'm sure all of my readers have been through this before, but for me, it was a first.

Today, standing in the entrance area of Zellers, I licked a payphone.

Some background:

I was in Zellers, searching for the game, "Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney" for my Nintendo DS. Frank and O-Town have been making me feel a little inferior about taking my MBA (they are at "Law School", so I figured that Phoenix Wright would give me a leg up on legalese. (I hear they cover this game in the more prominent law schools.)

They didn't have the game in Zellers, and I thought they may have it at EB Games, but I didn't want to drive over there to come back empty handed. In an "AHA" type of moment, I realized I could call from the Zellers, see if they had it, and either head home or head over to EB Games based on their response.

I've been fighting a nasty cold, and making matters worse, Kamloops has been hit hard by a recent cold snap. This has left my lips dry and chapped.

My "AHA" moment, coupled with my chapped lips combined to work heavily against me on this fateful afternoon. After dialing directory assistance to get the number, I licked my lips in preparation for the conversation. Unfortunately, the receiver was too close to my mouth, and I ended up making out with the receiver.

Many of you may be thinking that this was a quick moment, and I'm making it out to be more than it really was. To be clear, it wasn't a little dart, or a dab; it was a full-on, felt-every-indentation-and-hole-on-the-receiver, lick.

I will not forget today. I learned a lesson that unfortunately, most people (like me) learn the hard way. Licking payphones is rather unpleasant and should be avoided at all costs.

A giant step forward?

It's not every day that I see an advertisement that gets me clamoring for a product, but for some reason, the Gilette Fusion Power really caught my eye. So, last time I went to the supermarket, I went out and bought one (Razor Plus 4 blades ran me about $40).

The razor itself gets a thumbs up from me. There is a noticable improvement shaving with 5 blades vs 3. However, the jury is still out on the power feature...it actually scares me a little as I am shakey enough to begin with...anyway, here's a couple of pics. Can you guess which pic shows the razor turned on?

I had also contemplating posting pictures of my hairy shoulders and raising the question as to whether I should shave them or not. At the last second I decided not to bother. Shoulder shaving is more trouble than it's worth, really, and I had no intention of shaving them even if my readers demanded it.

Am I a psychic?

At the conclusion of my last amazing post, I left this postscript:

P.S.

Why does blogger slow down so often? I was pretty sure it was run by google....which I thought was unslowdownable. What's gives with blogger?

After I posted, I felt it needed a small edit, so I went back in to edit the post and not only did I experience the blogger slowdown, but also, I got this -

The blogger equivalent to the "blue screen of death".

What is happening to blogger? This is becoming a pain in the neck! I'm having to type posts, then save them in WORD just in case something goes wrong.

And the dog show winner is....

This little fella.

Apparently his prize for winning was an open mouth kiss from his handler. GROSS!

P.S.

Why does blogger slow down so often? I was pretty sure it was run by google....which I thought was unslowdownable. What's gives with blogger?

Happy Valentine's Day

A very awkward day for me. Apparently nobody in my class knows that I am single. They all think I'm still together with my ex-girlfriend. When we broke up, she didn't want me to talk about it with other people in class, so I didn't...I thought word would get out, but it hasn't. So I'm beside her in class today, and people are asking us, "What are you two doing tonight?" Type questions....I didn't know how to respond b/c she was sitting beside me, and she wasn't saying anything. AWKWARD. Anyway, I bit my tongue....but honestly, what the heck? I feel weird about the whole situation. Should I have told people? Was I right to bite my tongue? I didn't want to embarass her, but it was really uncomfortable.

Hope y'all have had a good / romantic day!

Being amused by Cheney was one thing....

Am I sick for being amused by this?

Cheney goes hunting....

This past weekend Dick Cheney shot his hunting buddy. Am I sick for being very amused by this?

If I am, at least I'm not alone.

Why so risky, Chris?

Why does the best wrestler in the world still need to take stupid risks?

Junk Email

I get a ton of junk email, but recently I've been getting a lot of utterly nonsensical junkmail.

For Example:

not social she tying steps not. goes explain parents you gym purpose?
profession night leader next?
end pretty miserable arms explain. human beautiful my carefully anybody turning,
latter end hard parents turning.
hard end is how light?

What do you suppose is the point?

How YOU doin'?

This is "the look" I wish I could give chicks when I'm "putting the moves on". Bill Gates is a better man than me in every conceivable way.

Depressing.

New Toy

For those of you scoring at home, I have owned at one time or another:

A Nintendo
A Gameboy
A Super Nintendo
A Nintendo 64
A Dreamcast
A Playstation 2
A Gamecube
An XBox
A PSP
Two Gameboy Advances
and

I'm happy with my latest purchase...and I'm also happy to own a PSP. Portable systems are where it's at.

In other news, I don't know how to take a self-portrait with my digicam (unlike some people I know). Here's the best I could get. I think I look like Lurch.

The weight loss plan has been a total yo-yo. Started at 205. Dropped to 192. Back up to 198. Down to 190. I'm sitting around 195 right now. I just looked at myself in the mirror. Apparently in the pic, I'm sucking it in for the camera.

I never really thought about this....

Bottled water costs more per litre than gasoline.

Are we getting screwed over?
